Cyber underworld: How it works

Cyber underworld: How it works

PUNE: Development kits, IT support, outsourced development and tech updates are normally indicators of a mature, corporatised economy. These have, however, become best practices being adopted by the underground cyber world today.

Cyber attacks are no longer mere statements or bragging tools. They have a clear agenda and targets and can siphon off huge amount of data or stall entire systems. And this shift has taken place even as the profiles, styles and motives of attackers have undergone a sea change too.

"There is a clear corporatisation of the underworld," said Shantanu Ghosh, vice-president of security software firm Symantec's India Product Operations. "Techies and criminals are trading malware each other. Such software tools enable non-technical criminals plan and launch cyber attacks. 83% of the attacks over the last year were created using malware development tools," he said.

Malware, short for malicious software, are programming (code, scripts, active content, and other software) designed to disrupt or deny operation and gather information that leads to loss of privacy. Software is considered to be malware based on the perceived intent of the creator rather than any particular features.

McAfee's technical product manager Vinoo Thomas agrees: "Crimeware has become a service where they offer common botnets, rent denial of service attacks. Or just ask people to build a Trojan which no anti-virus will detect. Many underground forums where people advertise these wares and cyber hackers buy it."

Payments are made either through wire transfers or in the same way money is paid out for drug supplies -- a chain of messengers. "You need not be a technical person to use them. They come with a user interface, you choose the features to make it function as you want," says Thomas.

This is similar to the software development kits released by technology majors wherein developers can create applications. Most of the intelligence is already built in and the users just choose features or tweak code. Such kits help non-techie criminals create malware attacks that they want.

Rohit Srivastwa, founder, ClubHack, a security-awareness initiative, says: "Attacks where such services are used are denial of service attacks and spam. But they are slowly being used for targeted attacks. Such services are available in Russia, Latvia, China and some other Asian countries, and even in the US." One of the first instances of such an organised malware attack came to light when Google, Adobe and US defence contractor Northrop Grumman were targeted between mid-2009 and December, 2009. The attacks, which according to Google, originated in China, were sophisticated and well resourced.

McAfee had said the primary goal of the attack was to gain access to and potentially modify source code repositories at these high tech, security and defense contractor companies.

The change
The shift has come on the back of a sharp change in the profile, style and motive of the cyber attacker. From being handiwork of publicity-hungry crooked techies, the dark depths of the cyber world has become the domain of criminals today.

The attacks are targeted, very specific with the political or financial. "They stay below the radar and focus on targeted attacks with a clear motive," says Ghosh. "They work in groups spread worldwide and communicate through internet relay chats. They trade attack toolkits that are available between $40 and $4,000," he added. Earlier, hackers would break into servers of large companies or spread generic viruses across computers.

The motivations
In most cases, the attacks are financially motivated: Getting hold of money or means to money like bank account/credit card details is one type. Stealing employee data, customer information or even intellectual property like car designs or drug formulations are other attack forms. Stolen data is then sold in the underground economy.

Political motivation can be reason for some attacks as well. Hacker groups Anonymous, and Lulzsec have claimed to launch attacks targeted at US government departments like NASA, CIA and Sony Pictures to steal confidential data.

The February 2010 Australian cyber attacks were a series of denial-of-service attacks conducted by the Anonymous online community against the Australian government in response to proposed web censorship regulations. Operation Titstorm was the name given to the cyber attacks by the perpetrators. These attacks resulted in lapses of access to government websites on February 10 and 11, 2010.

In April 2007, sophisticated cyber-attacks had swept across Estonia bringing down websites and systems of Estonian government organisations.

Increase your youtube views (Easiest Way)

Check the link below to visit the views exchange site-

Click here (Please join through my referral link to help me)

On the site above you can exchange YouTube views. you get points for viewing others videos, and then you can use them for your own videos, i got 275 views in one day.
just check it out, it is very easy and working.

About u2bviews :
-How does it all come together and work?
Basically, you first earn credits for viewing videos that other people have submitted using our unique Video Surfing script. The script pretty much does everything for you automatically, so all you pretty much have to do is to sit back and relax.
For each video you watch, in turn, you earn a 'credit'. Using the unique credits you have earned, you can then procceed onto submitting your own unique videos to u2bviews.

-How are you 100 percent completely sure that this will work?
Firstly, their system was heavily tested on existing videos before going live, and the results were quite promising. Basically, here's a quick overview on how the credit/view system work :
-> First, you insert your video to u2bviews. Our unique script then checks how many views the video has to start with. (it checks the views from youtube counter)
-> You then put in the desired number of credits you want.1 credit = 1 view on YouTube.
-> So for example: If you insert a video wich already has 10 views on YouTube, and then you place 10 credits on the video , the video will end up with 20 views on YouTube. (And only when the youtube counter reachs that views, it will then be removed from our rotation/surf system).

-Is there an alternate way to gain credits?
Yep, they have simple but yet strong referral system which you can use to earn a lot of easy credits!
You will be provided with a unique referral link, and if people register using that link and start earning credits, you will earn 0.1 credits for each credit they earn. Just imagine... reffering many people can mean you can earn dozens of credits just from other people watching videos!
(The video time betweek each video is random minimum 40 seconds to 70 seconds, it has a reason to be like that, because that way the views count like 95% of the cases, they are more effective even on your youtube "hotspots" (hotspots is a feature from youtube wich allows you to check in wich parts of the video people left))
